India has a great tradition of sports which is greatly influenced by the British era in the country in the 18th and 19th century. A wide range of sports and games are played both in rural as well as urban areas of the country but we surely well below its weight as compared to the other countries. At every Olympic Games, other Asian countries like China, Japan, South Korea walk away with multiple medals but India has to contend with two to three medals only. Despite the facts and records, the present condition of sports in India is not very good except Cricket. Cricket is a religion in India and undoubtedly gets the best management, sponsors and promoters of the country as compared to the other sports of the country.
Undoubtedly the sports in India require a lot of improvement because every sport has its own importance and deserves equal respect and management. The condition of the women teams is much poor and need more attention. It is also true that in past India has hosted several major sporting events such as Asian Games in 1951 and 1982, Cricket World Cup in 1987, 1996 and 2011, Hockey World Cup and Commonwealth Games in 2010 but there is a great need that the government ought to analyze these issues before it becomes too late.
To take the Indian sports to new heights, the government need to promote them, provide infrastructure to play them and made them compulsory at the school level. Sports organization in the country like Indian Olympic Association and Sports Authority of India, need to work hard towards raising the standards of Indian sports at the root level. We need the establishment of various talent programs and to open a host of sports academies and institutes to nurture young and bright sports persons. Corporate and sponsors need to come forward to help the other sports not only the cricket to get more sports icons like Leander Peas, Mary Com, Saina Nehwal, Sania Mirza, Abhinav Bindra etc.
