Qatar is hosting the 22nd edition of the FIFA World Cup from 20th November to 18th December 2022. The Arab World is hosting the FIFA World Cup for the first time. Also, this is the second World Cup to be hosted in Asia, which follows the 2002 tournament held in Japan and South Korea.

This 2022 FIFA tournament will be the last time that 32 teams are participating in the FIFA World Cup. FIFA plans to increase the field to 42 participating teams for the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament scheduled to be held in the year 2026 in Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is also the first time that the tournament is going to be held in the winter season, and not during the months of May, June, or July. Owing to Qatar’s high mercury levels during the summer season, the World Cup is being held during the winter months. This time, the FIFA World Cup will even be played for a reduced duration of 29 days.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup will be held at 8 venues across 5 host cities. The venues of the 2022 FIFA World Cup matches in Qatar are Khalifa International Stadium, Lucail Stadium, Al Rayyan Stadium, Education City Stadium, Al Bayt Stadium, Al Janoub Stadium, Al Thumama Stadium, and Stadium 974.

Qatar and Ecuador will be playing the opening match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor from 2130 hours onwards. The final match is slated to be held on 18th December 2022, which is celebrated as Qatar National Day, at Lusail Stadium in Lusail from 2030 hours onwards. France is the ruling World Cup champion after defeating Croatia in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. France posted a 4-2 win against Croatia in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
