Tokyo Olympics 2020

Sports

The host city of the 2020 Summer Olympics (or Tokyo 2020 or the Games of the XXXII Olympiad) is Tokyo, Japan. This is the fourth time that the Olympics game is being held in Japan, after Tokyo 1964 (Summer), Sapporo 1972 (Winter), and Nagano 1998 (Winter) game sessions. Also, Tokyo is hailed for being the first city in Asia to host the Summer Olympics two times.

The Tokyo 2020 games mark the second of three consecutive Olympics games to be conducted in East Asia consecutively; the first being the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, and the second being the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

The Tokyo Olympics is an international sports event that is scheduled from 23rd July 2021 to 8th August 2021. Some preliminary events were slated to begin from 21st July 2021, too.

At the 125th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Buenos Aires that was held in Buenos Aires in Argentina on 7th September 2013, the decision to choose Tokyo as the host city of the Olympics games was taken. The bidding process had three candidate cities (including Madrid, Istanbul, and Tokyo); Tokyo emerged as the winner.

The 2020 Summer Olympics were first scheduled to ensue from 24th July 2020 to 9th August 2020. However, as a fallout of the Covid pandemic, the event was deferred until the year 2021. Even so, the name Tokyo 2020 has been retained for marketing purposes.

Tokyo has been declared to be in a state of emergency, because of which the games are being conducted behind closed doors, which means no spectators are allowed at the stadiums.

The Summer Paralympics are scheduled to be held between 24th August 2021 and 5th September 2021, which is 16 days after the Olympic games conclude.

The 2020 Games are distinctive for introducing new competitions and re-introducing competitions that were previously held but eased out.

Among the new competitions at the Tokyo 2020 are Freestyle BMX, and 3*3 basketball. Freestyle BMX is a bicycle motocross stunts with BMX bikes. The 3*3 basketball game is a variant of basketball that entails 3 players on each side, one backboard, and a half-court arrangement.

More so, the Tokyo 2020 includes mixed-gender teams in a couple of existing sports. Madison cycling for men is being reintroduced in the Tokyo 2020. Along with this, women will get an opportunity to participate in the same event.

As per the newly-introduced IOC policies, the host organizing committee gets the liberty to add new sports to the Olympics format only once.

Some of the disciplines that the Japanese Olympic Committee has added include skateboarding, surfing, sport climbing, karate, softball, and baseball. Among this list, except for baseball and softball, the rest four games make their debut at the Tokyo 2020 games.

At the Tokyo 2020, countries such as Qatar, Philippines, and Bermuda won Olympic gold medals for the first time. In addition, Turkmenistan and San Marino took home Olympic medals for the first time.

At the Tokyo 2020 Games, there are about 205 nations and 11000 athletes who will be participating. This multi-sport event will include 339 events spread over 33 sports (with 50 disciplines).
