Ajit Agarkar is a former Indian cricketer who represented the Indian national team as a right-arm fast-medium bowler and a lower-order right-handed batsman. He was born on 04 December 1977 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He is the current chairman of the BCCI selection committee from 4 July 2023.
Agarkar made his Test debut for India against Zimbabwe at Harare on 07 – 10 October 1998. He made his ODI debut for India against Australia at Kochi on 01 April 1998. He made his T20 International debut for India against South Africa at Johannesburg on 01 December 2006.
Agarkar made his debut in Test cricket against Zimbabwe in 1998 and went on to play 26 Tests, taking 58 wickets at an average of 47. Agarkar’s real impact came in the limited-overs formats, particularly One Day Internationals (ODIs). He played 191 ODIs for India, amassing 1,126 runs and taking 288 wickets at an average of 27.85. Agarkar was known for his ability to swing the ball and his deceptive variations, which made him a valuable asset to the Indian team.
Throughout his career, Agarkar achieved several notable milestones, including being the fastest to reach 50 wickets in ODIs at that time. He also had a memorable performance in the 2000-01 Test series against Australia, where he took six wickets for 41 runs in just 15 balls, earning him a place in the record books.
After retiring from international cricket in 2007, Agarkar continued to be associated with the game as a commentator and analyst. He remains a respected figure in Indian cricket and is remembered for his contributions to the sport.
