Republic TV, a free-to-air English channel, was launched on 6th May 2017. The cofounders of this right-wing news channel are Arnab Goswami and Rajeev Chandrasekhar. However, presently, Goswami is the majority shareholder; Chandrasekhar relinquished his stake in May 2019.

A journalist and Indian news anchor, Arnab Goswami is the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Director of Republic Media Network.

Arnab was the former Editor-in-Chief of Times Now; he submitted his resignation on 1st May 2016 to launch Republic TV. During his stint at Times Now, he hosted the Newshour Debate show.

Among the funding members of Republic TV were AsiaNet (ARG Outlier Asianet News Private Limited), Arnab himself, and Samyabrata Goswami (Arnab’s wife). Also, Ramakanta Panda and Ramdas Pai (both educationists) funded Republic TV initially. Nonetheless, AsiaNet was primarily funded by AsiaNet at the start. Also, AsiaNet was mainly funded by Rajeev Chandrasekhar. 

However, during May 2019, Arnab bought back AsiaNet’s shares and gained the main stake in the news channel.

The headquarters of Republic TV are traced to Mumbai city in the Indian state of Maharashtra.

The sister channels of Republic TV are Republic Bharat and Republic Bangla; all three channels are owned by Republic Media Network. Republic Bharat and Republic Bangla broadcast news in the Hindi language and Bengali language respectively.
